About Claxton, Ga
The county seat of Evans County in Georgia is the city of Claxton. During 1890 the area around Claxton had a couple of dwellings surrounding it. The vision of the town started by W.R. Hendricks whose parents gave him a large tract of land.
Today this small town in the center of Evans County is home to over 2297 residence. Some say that the name Claxton derived from the actress, Kate Claxton, who was popular at the time the town got incorporated. Others believe that the city got its name in honor of a noted educator of the time, Philander Priestly Claxton. The Evans County courthouse, which was constructed in the 1920s is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places and has a Neoclassical 20th-century design.
The Claxton Bakery produces a large number of fruitcakes each year, which puts Claxton on the map as the “Fruit Cake Capital of the world. Other industries that are operating in Claxton is the beekeeping and poultry industries, some being the largest of their kind in the state.Claxton is also one of the few places that have been struck by a meteorite. This event happened in 1984 on December 10. The meteor that was classified as an L6 hit a mailbox in Claxton and later on, this mailbox was sold for $83,000.
