There are a few different boat charter options you can choose from, depending on what kind of experience you want. There are shrimping, fishing, and crabbing boat trips available, for those who like such activities and maybe want to catch some dinner, and there are also different river tours and even dolphin excursions for those who want to simply enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and the beauty of the nature surrounding them.

    Heyward House and Historical Center

The Heyward House dates back to 1841, when it was first constructed as a summer residence of a local plantation owner. It is a Carolina-style farmhouse that was later turned into a museum and an official welcome center of Bluffton. It gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the rich past of this town and the entire Lowcountry region through the numerous artifacts and exhibitions around the house. Apart from that, its historical value lies also in the fact that it is one of only eight remaining houses from the pre-Civil War period.

This historical center offers various guided tours, some of which are very modern and innovative, such as a walking tour, a house tour, a tour led by a virtual docent, and a so called “living portrait” tour where the visitors can bring the paintings to life by using their smartphones.

    Old Town Bluffton

Old Town is a historic district and the original one square mile area upon which the town was founded. Here you can visit the numerous historical monuments and landmarks, such as the beautiful Church of the Cross, the May River Theatre, and the Heyward House and Historic Center. Apart from that, you can enjoy a delicious meal in some of the local restaurants or visit one of the many galleries to learn more about the Bluffton art scene.

    Rose Hill Mansion

The Rose Hill mansion or a plantation house is a historic house from the mid-19th century built in the Carpenter Gothic style and that is now a part of the National Register of Historic Places. The house was initially built as a place of home, by Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline and it is an extremely beautiful architectural representation of that time. It is even said that during the Civil War, the house was spared destruction because it was deemed too beautiful to be burned.

Today, the building is open for guided tours, and even special events such as weddings, as it has been fully restored. The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens, and some of its highlights inside are the many artifacts and portraits from the original owners, the grand staircase, and the original furniture.

    Farmers Market of Bluffton

The Bluffton’s Farmers Market is held every Thursday in the center of Old Town Bluffton. It was first organized and opened in 2008 and has since been gathering both the local residents and the tourists on a weekly basis. It is an event that brings the entire community closer together and a place where everyone can buy locally grown and produced, fresh and healthy food, such as fruits and vegetables, cheese and chocolate, as well as artisan bakery foods.

Apart from that, there is also some entertainment present in the form of musical performances by the local Bluffton talent, and workshops for kids where they can learn to grow their own food.

    May River Gallery

The May River Gallery reflects the unique and charming spirit of the town and its local residents. Bluffton is a town full of life and culture, with great appreciation for arts, and it is in this gallery that you can find great works of art by some of the many artists from the Lowcountry region. The gallery holds numerous different types of art pieces and media – from applied arts such as glasswork and jewelry, through ceramic and woven artworks, to landscape paintings of the natural scenery or images of the beautiful local people.

The gallery also holds some interesting interactive events, so you can go on an organized art walk across the town or participate in the so called “paint out” and a create a work of art of your own. The gallery celebrates all forms of art expressions and supports the local community of artists, many of whom have already acquired regional and national recognition.

Whatever you decide to do in this town, you will not be disappointed, as the town offers unforgettable experiences in all its aspects. From the incredible charm and local hospitality to the amazing cultural and historical legacy and attractions, this town is one of a kind.
