Why even visit Savannah?
Most visitors come to Savannah to visit historic part of the town and to be honest; Savannah truly has a lot to offer to its visitors. It is full of fascinating and interesting history, home and structures, beautiful Savannah nature and interesting personalities that used to live there.
Like it is the case with any other tourist based related businesses there are a lot of shops that sell visitors T-shirts, rowdy bards, carriage rides, walking “hop on – hop off” tours and much more. But other than these “generic” attractions you will find a city that was built using a plan and the friendliest locals ever. Since the city was planned, you can find plenty of parks and squares for relaxation as well as beautiful architecture.
The city was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe, who arrived from England with about 114 settlers. There, for Savannah’s roots are pre-Revolutionary War, which means ancient when talking about America.
There are lots of firsts associated with Savannah:
The first capital of the 13th colony and later of Georgia
The first city in North America planned on an extensive system of squares
The first practical cotton gin
The first steamship to cross the Atlantic
The first lighthouse on the south Atlantic coast
The first Girl Scout Troop
The first experimental garden in North America
What makes Savannah so great and well known are its beautifully preserved historic neighborhoods. Founder of Savannah – Oglethorpe, when he landed in Georgia, was already with a plan for the city. It was laid out in a grid and planned for all development to be around these twenty-four squares.
Sometimes it is difficult to get around Savannah if you don’t have a city plan to help you out. Well, today you can get one of your mobile phones but still having one on paper enriches the feeling of walking down Savannah’s historic roads.
