In today’s interview, your top roofer in Savannah, GA South Shore Roofing is going to introduce the Deep Center. Deep Center uses writing, art, and culture to fuel the creative fires of Savannah’s young people, helping them connect their learning to their lives and their lives to their communities.

An interview has been taken with executive director Dare Dukes from the organization, who explained everything about the organization.

1. To begin with, can you briefly introduce your organization?
Deep Center uses writing, art, and culture to fuel the creative fires of Savannah’s young people, helping them connect their learning to their lives and their lives to their communities. In collaboration with adult writers, artists, and mentors, Deep youth learn how to tell their stories powerfully, celebrate their neighborhoods, elevate Savannah’s forgotten narratives, and find their place in history and current events. When this happens, they gain agency as learners, artists, and community leaders able to speak out on the issues affecting them and their families. Since our founding in 2008, Deep Center has supported more than 3,250 young people with fully funded scholarships to our creative-writing and leadership programs, and we’ve published more than 85 anthologies of youth work, trained more than 200 local writing mentors, hosted live readings reaching diverse audiences of 8,000, and shared Savannah’s stories around the nation.

2. What is your organization’s main mission?
Deep Center’s mission is to empower Savannah’s young people to thrive as learners, community leaders, and agents of change. Through creative writing, cultural production, and art, Deep creates platforms for the city’s youth and the village of support around them, including their families and adult allies, to share stories, engage in debates, and make Savannah a more just and equitable place.

3. In which ways have you contributed to the local community?
Deep Center uses creative writing, art, and culture to help young people connect their learning to their lives and their lives to their communities. We do this by meeting our young authors where they are, at their joys, unique funds of knowledge, and community literacies to celebrate who they are, challenge them to express themselves powerfully, and support their critical awareness of how their stories intersect with their neighborhood block, their city, and the world beyond. Deep helps Savannah’s youth and their families thrive.

4. What was the biggest challenge your organization had to face?
Forty-two percent of Savannah’s children grow up in poverty.

5. What do you perceive to be your biggest accomplishment?
Deep youth do better in school. Deep participants typically see remarkable increases in their grades. On average, 60% of youth participants see their ELA grades increase by nearly a full letter grade. Deep youth thrive. Deep participants see remarkable, often double-digit increases in emotional, social, and intellectual competencies that are critical to their ability to learn in any category and to thrive and develop as individuals and community members. Deep youth see themselves as leaders in their communities. Deep participants have all kinds of opportunities to use creative writing as a powerful tool for self-expression, building community pride, and speaking out on critical issues facing their neighborhoods and families.

6. How would you like the members of the local community to get involved with your organization?
Volunteers and donors.
