    History of Bluffton

Bluffton has a very colorful history and it has seen nearly every period of the history of South Carolina. It begins some 300 years ago, in the early 18th century with the Native American tribe called Yemassee. They founded their villages in the area where the town is now, but eventually moved to other parts, mainly Florida, when the wars between the British settlers and the Native Americans began in 1715.

The area of today’s Bluffton remained free for the settlers now, who began establishing and building plantations. The high ground and cool breezes in this area made it a perfect place for numerous residencies of plantation owners, who eventually turned the town into a summer retreat. During the Civil War period, however, the town suffered great destruction and more than two-thirds of it were destroyed – only around a dozen structures remained standing, some of them even to this today.

Rebuilding and restoring the town into its previous state was not easy nor fast – it did not really begin until the 1880s. It is then, after the rebuilding, that the city emerges as a commercial center of the entire Beaufort County. Bluffton still remains an important town and a commercial center and above all a popular vacation location.

    Location and Geography

The town of Bluffton is located in the State of South Carolina, in Beaufort County, in the Lowcountry region. It is situated between Interstate 95 and Hilton Head Island, primarily along the U.S. Route 268. Only 12 miles away from Hilton Head Island and about 20 miles away from Savannah, GA, the town is situated on a high bluff that overlooks the May River.

Bluffton has become the fifth largest town by land area in the state, as it has recently annexed four tracts of undeveloped land, expanding its territory by 32,000 acres. The town, therefore, consists of the Old Town (the original one square mile that the town was developed from), four tracts of land that were annexed (Palmetto Bluff Tract, Shults Tract, Jones Estate, and Buckwalter Tract), and several other auxiliary annexed parts (Village at Verdier, Bluffton Village, Willow Run, and Shultz-Goethe Road area).

    Population and Demographics

As of the official 2010 census, the town of Bluffton had a population of 12,530 residents. However, the estimates done in 2017 show that the number has exponentially and significantly grown and that the town’s population now counts 21,085 residents. This reflects the town’s great development and growth in recent years and the fact that it is the fastest growing town in the state. Another fact that supports this major growth is that just in 2000 the town had as little as 1,275 residents, which means that between 2000 and 2010, the town grew 882.7%.

Bluffton is also a part of the larger South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort area, where it is one of the primary cities. This metropolitan area includes two counties, Jasper County and Beaufort County, and according to the 2010 census, has a population of 187,010. The number of residents, however, is estimated to have grown, and the 2016 estimates put it at 211,614.

    Culture in Bluffton

Bluffton has turned in to a very lively, active and cultural town since its beginnings. It is a very whimsical and hospitable town, with a special spirit and a unique state of mind. The locals actually say that Bluffton itself is a state of mind. It has a strong character and individuality, finding the perfect balance between the new and the old, the growth and the past.

When it comes to art, Bluffton has a Society of Bluffton Artists, a non-profit organization, as well as a theatre company called the May River Theatre. The town organizes many annual activities that keep both the locals and the tourists entertained throughout the year.

Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival is another famous event, taking place in the fall and consisting of many different activities, such as trying local seafood, kayak tours, art shows, 5K run, and others.  Apart from those, there is also the Christmas Parade, a classic car show Shag & Drag, as well as the annual May River Cleanup.

When it comes to the historical sites, buildings and monuments, there is an array of things to see and learn about in this town. There is a lot to see and learn in the Bluffton Historic District, for example, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, or in the Heyward House Historic Center.

While in town don’t miss the chance to go on a fishing tour along the May River, or simply head to the docks for some recreational fishing on your own. You can also rent a kayak or go on a guided tour along the beautiful river around the estuaries and enjoy the nature.
