    About Beaufort, SC

This centuries-old city has a very rich and colorful history, as well as one of the most diverse and comprehensive ones, not only in South Carolina but also in the entire United States as well. The city of Beaufort, although relatively small, is filled with culture, life, and activities all year round. Beaufort is the county seat of the Beaufort County and should not be confused with the city of the same name in the neighboring state of North Carolina. The two cities, while having the same spelling, are differentiated by their pronunciations.

    Geography and Location

The city of Beaufort is located in the southern part of South Carolina, on the Port Royal Island in the Sea Islands and the Lowcountry region. The Sea Islands are a chain of great many islands along the coast of the Southeastern United States in the Atlantic Ocean. They are mostly tidal and barrier islands, there are more than a hundred of them, and they are located in the states of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

In South Carolina, the Sea Islands are situated in one of the three counties – Charleston, Colleton or Beaufort County, and Port Royal Island in the Beaufort County, where the city of Beaufort is located, is the most populous island in that county.

Beaufort is situated amid a marshy estuary and it also has annexed land on the Lady’s Island, which is another one of the Sea Islands of the Beaufort County.

    Population and Demographics

According to the last official Census in 2010, the city of Beaufort has a population of 12,361 residents. However, according to the latest estimates, that number has slightly risen, and it is believed that as of 2016, the city has a population of 13,445 residents. According to the official statistics, the city had a slightly increased number of male residents – 114.3 males for every 100 females, and the median age of the city was 30 years.

Beaufort is a part of a greater SC Metropolitan Statistical Area, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort area, where it is a primary city. This area consists of the two southernmost counties of South Carolina – Beaufort County and Jasper County. This metropolitan area had a population of 187,010 according to the 2010 census, but according to the 2016 estimates, that number has risen to 211,614.

    History of Beaufort

The city of Beaufort is the second oldest city in South Carolina, right after Charleston, and its history goes as far as 500 years back. The area where the city is located today was discovered in 1514 by Spanish settlers led by Captain Diego Guilarte de Salazar. As it was one of the largest natural harbors in the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, it was the point of interest of many settlers and explorers in the years to come.

After many failed attempts at colonizing the area, the British finally managed to do it and founded the city in 1711. The city developed rather slowly in the beginning, due to the dissatisfaction and many attacks by the Native American tribes of the area, as well as the Spanish Empire. Later, however, the city developed into a thriving fishing and shipbuilding center, as well as the local economy center during the Civil War.

The city was not significantly impacted by the war, but it did suffer great destruction due to a devastating hurricane in 1893, as well as a fire in 1907. It took some time for the city to recover from those events and in the second half of the twentieth century, it became a great and attractive tourist destination.

    Culture and Tourism

Due to its very scenic and beautiful location, as well as rich and colorful history, the city has become a very popular tourist destination, with almost two million visitors every year. Apart from the many historical monuments, buildings, and sites, the city has a great cultural, natural, and entertaining actives to offer as well. It is the home to several great annual festivals, such as the Home Water Festival, the Shrimp Festival, the Beaufort International Film Festival, and others.

Those who enjoy nature and outdoor activities can go on one of the many fascinating boat tours and cruises, as well as take up kayaking or paddle boarding, golfing, fishing, and many other similar fun activities.

When it comes to the arts, the city of Beaufort has nearly 20 art galleries operating throughout the city and is a great patron of local art and artists. Apart from the performing arts center within the University of South Carolina Beaufort, the city also has a community arts center called ARTworks.
