About Pooler Georgia
The city of Pooler was named after Robert William Pooler, a civic-minded citizen of Savannah, Robert worked for the Central of Georgia Railroad. The President of the company, William W. Gordon called the first station west of Savannah after Mr. Pooler. Two of them were both graduate law and engineering students born in 1796, they both played an essential part in Savannah's civic and military affairs.
Pooler never lived in the community named after him; he died on Christmas Day, 1853 in his house located on the Bull and Liberty Streets in Savannah. At the start of 1907, Pooler was incorporated. And Mr. H.G. Beaufort became the first mayor. A few years later, in 1923 the town hall was erected to have a permanent place to handle the local business. In those years one of the first women to vote in Georgia was Mrs. Goggines, who was the only woman alderman for Pooler in early 1900's. The town grew rapidly with shops, restaurants, banks and the opening of Interstate 95. The small town started expanding into what we have today.
Pooler currently has a population of 19,140 people, spread across 7,300 households and 5,183 families residing in the city. Pooler is also a center for commercial development in the Chatham County. Godley Station, the center for business development, has attracted big companies, like the construction equipment manufacturer JCB. Low crime rates and the small-town community have both been important factors in the town explosive growth. Currently, Pooler is one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia.
