The Best Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Georgia and South Carolina

We specialize in the installation, replacement and repair of asphalt shingle roofing systems.

You can’t turn around on any street within Statesboro without seeing an Asphalt Shingle Roof. They are the most popular type of roofing material on American homes for several different reasons including availability (they are available now at local suppliers), affordability (they are the most affordable roofing option) and they come in a huge variety of different colors and textures to give your roof a unique, designer appearance.

South Shore Roofing is a full service roofing contractor that specializes in the sales and installation of Atlas, Certainteed, GAF and Owens Corning Asphalt Shingle Roofing systems. From tearing off your old roof to the installation of your new roof and a meticulous cleanup of our work site you’ll never know our team was even there aside from your beautiful new roof.

What You Need To Know About Asphalt Shingles:

Rain, ice, snow, hail, wind and the sun all work against your roofing material constantly. The tell tale sign of a wearing asphalt shingle roof will be in your gutters. If you’ve ever taken a handful of debris out of your gutter and were left a handful of sand, it’s a pretty good sign your roofing material is breaking down.  The sand in your gutters is actually the roofing granules from your asphalt shingles. These granules form a protective outer layer on your roofing shingle and without them, your shingle’s lifespan will be greatly reduced.

Asphalt Shingles Types We Install in Statesboro GA

    3-tab-shingles

    Standard 3 Tab Shingles

3 tab shingles are the economical option for a home or building owner that wants a good reliable roofing material but doesn’t necessarily worry about the aesthetics of the roof.  Affordable, durable and available in a wide variety of colors 3 tab shingles are an excellent choice if you plan on selling the home in the next 5-10 years or if you just don’t have the budget for a designer/architectural shingle.

    Architectural Shingles

    Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles (also known as laminated shingles or dimensional shingles) are made out of premium materials and offer superior durability and along with that, a rock solid warranty too.   If you want your roof to make a statement or become an integral part of the exterior decor of your home or building than an architectural shingle is an excellent choice.  Available in a wide variety of colors, patterns and textures we can install an architectural shingle that can look like a cedar shake or tile or even slate.

South Shore Roofing sells and installs 3 tab shingle products from the leading manufacturers such as GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and Atlas.

What is an Architectural or Laminated Asphalt Shingle?

Architectural shingles are made from the same composition as a standard 3 tab asphalt shingle but they are just built to a much heavier quality standard.  The thickness adds to the durability and also the dimensional appearance of the shingle.

3 tab shingles were the shingle of choice throughout the home building boom of the 80’s and 90’s.  A laminated shingle is made of an extra layer (or often more) of material on the lower portion of the shingle so that when it’s overlapped and installed it the exposed roofing material gives a much deeper look to the shingle hence the term “dimensional shingle” because they don’t look perfectly flat, rather they add texture and dimension to your roof.

In terms of overall durability a laminated asphalt shingle will last longer than a standard 3 tab shingle because there is more material (asphalt, roofing granules and fiberglass) per square foot of shingle.  This allows them to resist heat, hail impact, water damage and UV damage much better (and for longer) than their 3 tab counterparts.

Asphalt Shingle Ratings – The ratings on Asphalt Shingles were formulated by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Shingles with a Class 4 rating have more adhesive strips under the tabs which help them resist strong winds. Class 4 shingles also take six nails as opposed to four when fastening the material.

The Underwriters Laboratory (UL) test determines durability from wind and hail impacts. A Shingle that can withstand 60 mile per hour winds for two straight hours will gain the UL certification.

Look for a roofing contractor that will spend some time with you to educate on the products that are available so you have enough information to make an informed decision about your roof.  If you just let the roofing contractor choose you might not receive the right product for your roof, rather the most profitable product for the roofer.

There are so many roofing materials on the market that it’s important to identify your needs in a roof first (budget/looks & durability) so we can determine the best option for your particular situation.

    Roof Ventilation

Roof Flashings and Proper Roof Venting

The flashings on your new asphalt shingle roof will need to completed and we make sure these are done correctly.  Poorly installed flashing around chimneys, dormers, skylights and other objects on your roof is responsible for many leaky roofs and upset homeowners.  We’ll take the additional time and care to build and install your flashing so that water intrusion won’t become an issue.

While we’re on your roof and removing the old material down to the roof decking we also take the time to make sure your roof ventilation is adequate and if needed we can install new roof ridge vents to improve the circulation of air through your attic.  This can help improve the energy efficiency of your home and prevent your attic from developing any mold, mildew or other moisture related problems that are expensive to repair!
